Review of Trolls (2016) by Junelkean — 21 Jan 2018
Movies are reminiscent when it brings back many memories from your childhood. "Toy Story," in particular, reminisces our childhood and at the same time provided us a great franchise. However, "Transformers" is a different case. Though it reminded us of the robots we've collected, it also destroyed our childhood ala Michael Bay. And 2016's "Trolls" is the perfect example of an average toy-to-movie adaptation.
Upon a near look, Trolls is juvenile. And yes, almost the entire movie is. The concept is paper-thin. The animation is vibrant as ever. And the jokes are intended for six-year olds. But DreamWorks Animation offers young ages the important themes of friendship, love and positive self-image. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake voice star as the two lead protagonists in the movie. And while everyone surrounding them seems to be over-the-top foolish and unrealistic, the two of them are pleasures to listen and watch to.
There's a rainbow vibe with its animation - heavy use of vibrant-looking visuals and awfully bright neon pastels. Nevertheless, the pop-culture references and upbeat songs are sporadically effective especially for youngsters.
VERDICT: Trolls is all the glitters and not the gags. But that doesn't mean it's a bad movie. When it shines, it truly dazzles with extra sparkles.
