Review of Trolls (2016) by Johnny T — 20 Dec 2016
Trolls is like Smurfs, but way better and way funnier and actually a decent movie. Exuberant, busy and sometimes funny, DreamWorks Animation's Trolls is determined to amuse. There's little memorable about Trolls, but you got to hand it to these weirdly happy little people -- they sure know how to put a smile on a kid's face. If you've asked yourself why on earth there needs to be a movie about Troll dolls, this doesn't really provide a strong answer, yet for all its awkwardness and fluff-brained logic, its enthusiasm is infectious. Trolls is cinematic junk food, but not just some sloppy greasy cheeseburger. It is one of those exquisitely pretty little cakes you find in really nice patisseries. Sure, the kiddies might not care and will be happy just to see these colorful poppet-faced trolls using their hair to perform extraordinary feats while happily singing and dancing along. Their parents, though, might be counting down the minutes until they can see something more hair-raising. If you've ever been curious as to how far a studio toon could push the doors of perception in terms of a visual palette, or simply wondered what a Kendrick/Timberlake duet of "True Colors" would sound like, Trolls will answer these questions in between sandblasting you with manufactured joy. Otherwise, this is one of those time-killers that's impossibly exuberant, insanely likable and instantly forgettable.
VERDICT: "In The Zone" - [Mixed Reaction] These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says buy an ex-rental or a cheap price of the DVD to own. If you consider cinema, ask for people's opinion on the film. (Films that are rated 2.5 or 3 stars).
