Review of Troll (1986) by Chuck C — 13 May 2008
It feels unfair for me to judge Troll after having seen Troll 2 1st. Troll 2 takes the Troll idea and goes takes it as retarded as it possibly could have been taken, making it the holy grail of stupid horror.
But to be fair, Troll does a great job of being idiotic as well and stands on it own next to its younger, stupider brother. The one advantage that Troll has over its sequel is the delight gained from watching since-then big name actors make awful career moves.
Michael "Law and Order" Moriarty, Julia "future multi-billionaire" Louis-Dreyfuss and Sonny Bono all make asses of themselves here in unique ways. That being said, Troll is actually somewhat competant in its acting, music and costumes (relatively speaking of course).
In fact, those elements make Troll seem newer than its sequel. However, the plot and script are still very dumb, creating a slighly uneven film. Nevertheless, if you like stupid horror, you cant go wrong here.
