Review of Triumph of the Will (1935) by Stephan B — 14 Feb 2007
Amazing filmmaking put to sinister use. Unlike many of her Soviet propaganda filmmaker counterparts, Riefenstahl remains unreconstructed in most people's minds. Whether or not she was truly repentant for the outcome of the insidious politics she helped market to the German people, this film was still a major landmark in the history of propaganda filmmaking.
It's worth understanding, at the very least, as elements of its effective visual language are still with us today -- not just in propaganda, but in marketing and entertainment as well.
