Review of Triumph of the Will (1935) by Philip E — 27 Jun 2007
Right, let me just start by saying I'm not a Nazi sympathizer. That having been said, know that this, while being one of the foremost propaganda pieces in history, is also considered to be a groundbreaking cinematic achievement and has been referenced in movies ranging from The Lion King to Star Wars: A New Hope.
Indeed, if nothing else it's gorgeous to look at, I think, despite the vile content...the opening shots from Hitler's airplane were reminiscent of some type of fantasy rather than poison.... There was one scene especially with an unbelievably fanatic young man which I found a bit disturbing.
..and overall, witnessing the blind hope and love emanated by a nation duped by a black-hearted shepherd was unsettling...but I still think this film should be viewed nonetheless. I watched this work with commentary, which at first I thought was distracting but ultimately proved itself as a useful aid.
Once again, the 3 stars are for the cinematic experience and historical significance, rather than the actual content which prevents me from giving it more.
