Review of Triumph of the Will (1935) by Thomas M — 16 Dec 2009
Please do no condmen me. I saw this on you tube in its complete form. This was a propaganda film made in Germany during the years the Nazis ruled the country. By all means this movie is evil. In fact I would go on to say it is downright scary.
Watching all these people being brainwashed into thinking that this mad man is their savior is quite disturbing. But the movie has lived on for the very reason I chose to watch it. It really is the best evidence of the motion picture form being subverted for use as brainwashing propaganda.
Leni Reifenstal claimed she made this movie as a documentary and was unaware of the horrors of the holocaust. Maybe. I mean at the time the holocaust had not yet happend. "Crystal Night". The beginning of that tragedy hadn't happend yet (Novembe 9, 1938).
This takes place in 1934. During a convention of sorts for these demons. And anyway this movie served to inspire a sequence used in the "Lion King"!!!! Thats a little odd. Visually there are some startling images that I have seen many times over previously in various history channel specials and in the great documentary of the horrors of the holocaust "Shiloh".
Anyway like the similarily controversial fims "The Birth of a Nation" and "The Jazz Singer" there are some innovative visuals to be seen but quite frankly the subject matter of this and "The Birth of a Nation" make these two movies borderline unwatchable just on a basic principal.
I don't care about the argument of "artisitic vision". Leni Reifenstal, unless brainwashed, should have been willing to end her life than aid these bastards.
