Review of Triumph of the Will (1935) by Steven M — 30 Jan 2010
A chilling document. The cinematic techniques on show here are often astounding. There are some great close-ups of faces in crowds, stunning crane shots and excellent edits. I particularly liked a shot of hundreds of flags which seemed to melt into one another and started to resemble grass swaying in the breeze.
Riefenstahl was clearly a great talent and that seems to be underlined by the fact that she claimed to be an outsider to the regime, and was apparently asked to view the regime as such. The marching scenes towards the end do drag though which seems a misjudgement.
I'll be thinking about this for a while.
