Review of Triumph of the Will (1935) by Peter T — 08 Feb 2010
Technically this is a master work, no question about it. As far as any kind of interesting narrative is concerned, well, it doesn't have one as such. If you dont much fancy watching lots of impeccably dressed, marching Nazi clowns, interspersed with shots of Hitler and chums, then this isn't the piece to settle in with your arm around your girlfriend, and a big bowl of popcorn.
At nearly two hours running time you might find yourself waning somewhat towards the end, which is quite understandable considering the dubious content (a mild understatement there). But if you do manage to hang on in there until the bitter end, you know you have just watched something of great historical significance. Even despite the contempt I would hope you would be feeling towards what the Nazis stood for. But by jesus some of it really is scary shit...
