Review of Trishna (2011) by Todd G — 22 May 2012
A retelling of the tragedy of Tess of D'Urberavilles in India. The title character is too passive and capitulating to carry entire film.
Pinto plays the socially constrained Trishna, who flees from her romance because it is an affair outside of social class, parental bless and expectations of society. But this seems to be her only strong reaction through the whole movie. She is passive and accepting of anything that her lover requires of her, leading to little conflict until the burning, violent end of the movie.
Played well by the actors, but a bit bland in story until the climax.
