Review of Trilogy of Terror (1975) by Scott P — 13 Aug 2008
OK, so as a little kid, I made the mistake of watching the Sci-Fi Channel one day and I stumbled upon Trilogy of Terror 2, shortly into it's final chapter about the return of the Zuni Fetish Doll. I was scared shitless. I don't remember how many nights I checks all the corners of a room or checked under a bed because of that fucking little doll. Seriously, it freaked me out.
Years later, after my testicles descended and I became obsessed with horror films, I finally found out what the film's title was. Even after all those years I was still very hesitant to see it again. I stress that again, VERY hesitant. I got a job at a video store with an extensive horror collection. Naturally I was like a kid in a candy store, but whenever I passed by Trilogy of Terror I thought to myself "uhhh maybe later...". Well my testicles finally dropped once more and I grabbed it from my store and literally JUST watched it.
The first two stories are as another person has said, very twilight zone-like. They're pretty good but nothing amazing and nothing quite to write home about. However when the third story began (the one with Mr. Fetish Doll), the film takes a drastic turn.
Almost as if the first two stories were meant to throw you off guard, this final story is complete tension. Granted, it was 1975 but the Zuni Fetish Doll is pretty damn convincing and had me on the edge of my seat. Maybe it's how ugly the little fucker is but seriously it had me back to feeling like that scared little kid again. And to top it off I was watching it in a basement in the dark. Anyways, the point is this. Any horror buff (whether they are a fan of killer doll movies or not) needs to see this film primarily for the third and final chapter. In addition, the actress Karen Black stars as all the leading rolls in each story and does an absolutely fantastic job. Perhaps my balls will drop once more and I shall grab the sequel from my store, the one that scared me so bad to begin with. YAY FOR HORROR!
