Review of Trick 'r Treat (2007) by Joe I — 11 Jan 2011
This little independent does what a good indie does, a lot with very little. Though it has a tremendous amount of talented actors in the cast including the great Brian Cox, Dylan Baker and Anna Paquin.
Even the little fat kid from Bad Santa makes an appearance! It is a collection of 4 horror stories taking place in the same town on Halloween night at the same times and where a lot of the characters mingle between the stories.
I love the narrative style that fuses the four stories going back and forth between them and using the time frames like a merry-go-round. The movie is short at around 75-80 minutes, but it is well worth it.
A great dark comedy/horror film in the "Drag Me to Hell" Sam Raimi mold. And speaking of Sam, the creepy little "Sam" character is the coolest thing I've ever seen. I'm not sure if it is a reference to the demon Samhaim.
Great little movie with a lot of awesome memorable scenes that I am quite frankly mad I didn't catch until now. They put out shit in theaters that can't hold a candle to this cult little indie classic.
I give it 4 stars because it is what it is in the end, a horror/comedy movie that doesn't take itself seriously, but boy does it deserve and earn every single one of them.
