Review of Trick 'r Treat (2007) by W. David L — 13 Feb 2011
This movie is exactly what I wanted most of the horror movies I wasn't allowed to watch when I was a kid to be like. It's what I wanted from Creepshow. In fact I would say that in tone it falls somewhere between that and the Buffy tv series.
It's horror, but certainly not scary, and it's peppered with dark humor without being a comedy. It's a clever weave-together of multiple stories, well acted (by some great actors no less), nice and brief (under 90 minutes), and it has a real sense of place.
Most horror movies don't even aim that high. The weaving is nice because it dodges the feel one gets from anthology movies, where there are stories you put up with to get to the ones you want, and because it is essentially doing what Crash did (the Oscar winner, not Cronenberg's) in a way less obvious than Crash did it (and I like Crash quite a bit).
Clearly this must be difficult because it's almost always apparent when it's done - Magnolia, Amorres Perros - you notice it. So good for these guys. Now I can count on a hand and a half the number of movies in the category "horror" that I even like, so I have to concede that I just don't usually get involved in these movies when I say that I found most of the twists this movie makes to standard horror stories predictable, so there were no shocks or spooks for me.
So what? I still liked it!
