Review of Trick 'r Treat (2007) by Steve F — 13 Mar 2011
I haven't seen a perfect blend of horror and comedy since Scream...until now.
Trick 'r Treat is the hidden horror gem that is everything you could possibly want in a movie. It interweaves four short stories set on the same Halloween night, and how not following the rules of the beloved holiday can lead to some deadly consequences. This film is like a mix of Scream, Creepshow, Crash, and Pulp Fiction...which is one hell of a combination that must be seen.
First off, this film is flat-out hilarious. I laughed out loud so much, I thought I was crazy for finding some of this stuff funny. And right when you think you are in for another giggle, they slap a scare right in front of you and jump out of your seat. This formula works so well in fact it's a wonder it's not used more often. This film relies heavily on the old horror style, the less you show the scarier it is, and it works beautifully. Now I'm not saying this is a violent free film, it certainly has it's share of bloodshed, but it's more like 1978 Halloween than 2007 Halloween.
This film was not released in theaters, straight to video, which blows my mind. That proves that the entertainment business focuses on what sells more than originality, which is strangely lacking in films today. This film is outstanding in every sense of the word, and if you are horror buff, this is a must see. This might be the best horror film in a long damn time...possibly of the decade. All I know, is it is amazing.
