Review of Trick 'r Treat (2007) by James C — 20 Jan 2013
It's Halloween and everyone wants a piece of the pumpkin pie (see what I did there). Murderers, Ghouls, Werewolves and strange creatures from beyond the grave are all present in this pick 'n' mix horror tale. Like many movies targeting a teen audience Trick 'r Treat contains the usual elements; knives, booze, blood and boobs. I think that although the movie tries to be different from the norm it ends up delivering more of the same.
The film doesn't take itself too seriously and is very much in the spirit of Halloween, but didn't fully commit or deliver on either front. It's not spooky, nor is it funny. For me it is superficial, unaffecting, depth-less, flimsy, and unengaging.
I found the comic book sequence that accompanied the opening credits quite creative. After that I was pretty much waiting for the credits to roll at the end. It's a shame the space in between wasn't utilized better.
