Review of Trick 'r Treat (2007) by Jesse Z — 12 May 2015
Despite how wonky and stupid I thought that Trick 'r Treat would turn out to be, I got one of those weird moments where I realized I was enjoying myself. Trick 'r Treat works because it's similar to movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th but all the stories therein are in the same neighborhood.
It's like if Meyers, Chucky, Vorhees and Freddy Krueger were all neighbors and Freddy Vs. Jason never happened. The movie is somewhat of an anthology film where it combines a bunch of creepy stories that happen on Halloween, and the real scare is that it's good.
It pays homage to classic Halloween-ish ghost stories you may have told your friends in grade school, and makes them rather visceral and real. The downsides include some really corny acting, and at times I really couldn't take some stories seriously to the point of it being laughable (ie the one with the werewolf women).
But the movie turned the bad stories around with creepy pumpkin children with burlap bag masks. For example when my dog barked when I was watching the movie I felt as if I had a mini heart attack, which was really fun.
So the movie is nothing thought provoking but it's a really well made and entertaining Halloween based exercise in horror that helps you remember that the genre can still actually be enjoyed.
