Review of Tremors 4: The Legend Begins (2004) by Jacob B — 03 Mar 2018
Did we really need a prequel? It doesn't answer any questions regarding the Tremors mythology and all it does is reveal that the human-graboid conflict is a lot older than we think. It's fun to see Michael Gross putting on a silly British accent and there's far less poor CGI than in the last movie.
I laughed a few times and some of the music isn't that bad. Yet Tremors 4 is the first entry in the franchise that sucked. The story is a rehash of the first film almost as if they're relying solely on you not having seen the first movie to know about the little graboid (or "dirt dragons" as the movie calls them here) bait-and-switch of "bigger than they appear".
And speaking about the graboids, they're barely in the movie. Yeah, it's direct-to-video and effects all the time are expensive but seriously they had more screen time in the first movie. Trying to say "it's a prequel, not a sequel" isn't really a valid excuse in my book.
The action, compared to the last three movies is, in my opinion, fairly mundane. It's a Western movie that's actually a legitimate Western. You have the guns, use them more often on these creatures.
Tremors 4 could've been a lot worse without Michael Gross but if you're hoping that the movie might answer some questions about the graboids beyond "older than they think", you're going to be disappointed.
