Review of Tremors 3: Back to Perfection (2001) by Patrick E — 10 Jun 2010
Direct-to-DVD sequels are generally pretty poor, and considering the previous two Tremors films had gotten a cinema release, I wasnâ??t expecting this third entry in the series to be anywhere near the standard of even the second film. Surprisingly it turned out to be an enjoyable film with plenty of comedy and Graboid action and was equally as good as the second film in the series.
The plot focuses on the character of Burt Gummer, the crazy gun toting character from the first two films, as he returns to small town of Perfection after spending 11 years away. Perfection was the town featured in the original Tremors film and has been Graboid free for 11 years but unfortunately for the townsfolk they have decided to make a reappearance and with a few extra tricks up their sleeves. Itâ??s up to Gummer to lead the townsfolk in taking out the new Graboid population by using his usual arsenal of guns and bombs!
Although the story is essentially the same as the first two films, the third film does as the second did in making a change the Graboids form. In the second film they changed into a form that could walk on land, the change in the third is every bit as dramatic and manages to keep the film fresh. The loss of Fred Westâ??s character is a big loss but the Burt Gummer character is strong enough to carry the film and the new tour guide character is good comic relief. The effects are good for the most part although there are a couple of ropey CGI scenes. The comedy works well and strikes the perfect balance between dialogue driven and silly visual comedy. The action is decent and the film moves along at a brisk pace getting into the main Graboid storyline early into the films running time.
Tremors 3 is a silly but entertaining film thatâ??s funny and features some good creature effects and action. Itâ??s never going to win any awards but anyone who enjoyed the first two will enjoy this one as well.
