Review of Tremors (1990) by Shane V — 24 Dec 2009
One of my all-time favorites. Here's today's review of the cult classic "Tremors.".
Val & Earl are two big-dreaming handymen who live in the isolated little town of Perfection Valley, Nevada. Sick of their menial, dirty-work lifestyle, they decide to pack up and move to the city. But it seems that their plans fall apart when the town comes under siege by a group of underground monsters.
A simple enough plot. Originally an independent film, this movie, like "The Evil Dead" spawned a huge cult fanbase. A perfectly entertaining monster movie if there ever was one made in America. The special effects are surprisingly good, with only 2 or 3 slip-ups throughout. The monsters themselves are well-built, cleverly created, and officially scary. The characters in the town are relatable, & realistic, yet colorful and enjoyable. The thrills are great for a monster movie, and not too over-the-top. The chills are a few, but effective and appropriate. The setting is well-thought out and fits the story perfectly. There are no plot holes whatsoever, and there's no tasteless gore. I would barely consider this a horror movie, more like an action-adventure with little sprinkles of subtle comedy here and there. And the modest 1:36 runtime helps too. It's not a novel idea, but it's the first of its kind in the movies. I give "Tremors" 8.5 out of 10.
