Review of Tremors (1990) by Bill M — 02 Sep 2017
Tremors is, I believe, one of the ultimate underrated films, think about it, It's just a perfect film really isnt it? The horror and comedy elements are beautifully entwined and pitch perfectly balanced, with neither element diluting the other, a problem that can often be found with many horror comedies, which can sometimes be too comical to be in any way scary.
This is not a problem here, the horror stuff is really strong and often properly intense (i remember seeing this when I was 10, how many movies scare you into not wanting to get back off the couch at all?) there are truly grisly moments and scenes which are legit creepy (the discovery of old Edgar's body up the electric tower is really chilling) and the pace is fantastic and thrilling, especially once the residents of the 14 people town have to get on their roofs to escape being eaten, and the subsequent mission to get out of town.
The performances too are great, especially Kevin Bacon and Fred Wards hugely likeable buddy pairing, and to top it off the monsters are still perfectly executed and frequently awe inspiring practical effects magic.
Exciting, scary, very funny wonderfully acted and brilliantly directed, Tremors is the whole package. One of the best monster movies ever made, one of the best comedy horrors and one of my all time faves.
