Review of Tremors (1990) by Riff J — 03 Jan 2018
Paying homage to the classic '50s monster B-movies while knowing not to take itself too seriously, Tremors is an underrated classic. Ironic, ain't it? A movie that didn't perform well at the box office ended up spawning a franchise: four direct-to-video sequels, a short-lived TV series and a cancelled video game.
Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward remain irresistibly entertaining as those damn two asshats who don't have any damn thing to do in this damn town. Pardon my French. The effects are simplistic yet convincing, mainly because of the fact that they were there.
Then there's the action and humour. The one thing I found genuinely hilarious is with one of the graboids as that ass-blaster (Excusez mon francais) devours the pogo stick of the youngest resident in the ironically named for movie purposes then it comes out of the ground almost as if he doesn't like the taste of it.
It's not a big action blockbuster but I understand why Burt Gummer is a fan-favourite as he and country singer Reba McEntire begin shooting one of them until it finally dies from too many gunshot wounds.
I don't think that's inherently a spoiler. It says PG-13 but I think this movie is fun for all ages.
