Review of Treeless Mountain (2009) by Bill M — 20 May 2010
Sit lotus style and pour a cup of hot tea. Pretend you are about to meditate instead of view a film. This experience is austerely beautiful with a minimilistic script and ultra realist feel. Little is said and not much happens. On the other hand what does occur determines the earth and sky where our young heroes will set root.
Following the lives of two impoverished Korean girls will remind you of how it feels to have no power over where you live and who lives with you. But it also imprints on how a little love and protection can give brave young kids enough to live a fulfilling existence, and a seed from which to dream. It doesn't try to be more than a pure reflection of a difficult upbringing, which is its success and limitation.
