Review of Treasure Planet (2002) by Ashley H — 28 Apr 2008
"Treasure Island" is one of my favorite books--so when I heard that Disney was doing a retelling of it (IN SPACE!), I was pretty excited. I think they've captured the essence of the story well.
Although I don't really like the way that the studio made Jim a completely dysfunctional rebellious teenager--because Jim Hawkins (Island) was not--I do appreciate the fact that they didn't throw in the typical stupid Disney-esque gags.
This is a film from the "dark age" of Disney, when not too many of their films were good and people were turning to Pixar. But this one stands out from the cacophony of forgettable animated films.
(David Hyde Pierce's character is the best one he's done since Niles Crane on the television show "Frasier"!).
