Review of Travellers and Magicians (2003) by Robert H — 21 Jun 2008
This movie was written and directed by a Buddhist luminary. It is a very well made story within a story within a story. The format brings attention to the very idea of existence and our place in it. After all, what is reality but what we make of it; what is the future but the moments of our present added up.
Lots of diverse elements bring together the story, and it's fun. Great camera work, beautiful scenic landscapes, actresses/actors; thoughtful script. Too bad I don't know Bhutanese, as I bet it would be a lot better in the original language. Very much steeped in the Buddhist tradition, while presenting a take different from the one that I am more familiar with. It is bitter sweet, perhaps more in keeping with the actual topography of life.
Thumbs up, and I would see the movie again, especially with company as a spring board for discussion.
May you who read this be well and happy!!
