Review of Transylmania (2009) by Jason D — 16 May 2010
While establishing an interesting resume of unintentionally funny horror films like King Cobra and Piñata: Survival Island, twin brother filmmakers David and Scott Hillenbrand took a sabbatical and focused on dim-witted National Lampoon comedies like Dorm Daze 1 & 2.
Well, the two brothers morph their two established genres into Transylmania, a laughably corny, slapstick movie (and a VERY loose Dorm Daze sequel) about a motley group of college students who travel to Transylvania to study abroad at Razvan University, little knowing that this ensemble cast is about to get larger when they endure vampires, vampire hunters, hunchback babes, mad scientists, and a bunch of other comically-retarded nonsense.
The mass majority of this film is dumb slapstick fun, with juvenile laughs that may only get kids 16 and younger, however, a few choice moments manage to slip through and actually be funny. One scene that comes to mind, yet is tragically only mere seconds long, involves a high priest at a funeral who obviously suffers from Tourette's Syndrome.
That tiny part had me laughing my ass off and rewinding it over and over again for several minutes. Overall, Transylmania is an extremely silly film, but moderately better than the usual barrage of utterly awful direct-to-DVD raunchy comedies.
If you're going to watch, leave your brain at the door and enjoy!
