Review of Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) by Perrine B — 29 Jun 2014

After the pissbox that was REVENGE OF THE FALLEN the only reason I was sold on seeing this third installment was the promise of a nearly hour-long robot invasion/battle set entirely in Chicago which is where I reside. I will say upfront that my excitement for said invasion/battle was rewarded immensely as not only did I mindlessly enjoy the hell out of it, I think it made for one of the most visually exciting special effects sequences I've ever seen. if only the rest of the film were the same...

We're back following Shia LaBeaof as he once again teams up with Optimus, Bumblebee, John Tuturro and a new girlfriend (Rosie Huntington-Whitely who is just stupid hot) as they try to fend off an evil plan to rebuild the lost planet of Cybertron in place of Earth. Stupid, I know but this is the third one of these things; You really think they're gonna do better in the story dept? We have the overlong run-time filled with scenes of Shia trying to be an interesting character doing things such as interact with mom and dad, get a new hot girlfriend, find a job, meet his quirk filled boss and more! Yeah I didn't care and I'm assuming neither will anyone else. the action in the film is actually thrilling as it was the first time Bay decided to film in 3D therefore forcing him to slow down on his filming and editing style to give each scene a chance to breathe.

The plot is as ridiculous as ever and we are still not caring for those human characters but its nowhere near as insulting the the intelligence as REVENGE OF THE FALLEN and the visuals are impressive and at times truly breathtaking. It's not the best film but it certainly wasn't the worst and in this franchise, that's as good a victory as it can afford. RATING: C+.
