Review of Transcendent Man (2009) by Arthur V — 25 May 2011
DO NOT MISS THIS!!! Kurtzweil author of The Age of Intelligent Machines, and The Singularity Is Near. Transcendent Man documents Kurzweil's quest to reveal mankind's ultimate destiny and explores many of the ideas found in his New York Times bestselling book, The Singularity is Near, including his concept of exponential growth, radical life expansion, and how we will transcend our biology.
TRANSCENDENT MAN chronicles the life and ideas of an inventor and futurist Kurtzweil that presents his bold vision of the Singularity, a point in the near future when technology will be changing so rapidly, that we will have to enhance ourselves with artificial intelligence to keep up.
He predicts this will be the dawning of a new civilization in which we will no longer be dependent on our physical bodies, we will be trillions of times more intelligent and there will be no clear distinction between human and machine, real reality and virtual reality.
Human aging and illness will be reversed; world hunger and poverty will be solved and we will ultimately cure death. Critics accuse Ray of being too optimistic and argue that the dangers of the Singularity far outweigh the benefits, pointing out the apocalyptic implications that once machines achieve consciousness, we may not be able to control them.
Wow what a documentary about the future and near future of humans combined with technology. This is a must see documentary for everybody interested in technology life philosophy religion spiritual things and even death.
Kurtzweil goes into depth and minute details of his future forecasting where Alvin Tofler in 1970s Future Shock was a more general educational sociological discussion with no real meaty insight into what the future will bring.
This documentary is excellent also because it contains and covers some of Kurtzweils critics and they explain how he is/could be wrong. Both views are just fascinating and filled with intellectual tidbits, technology future, and philosophy.
