Review of Transcendence (2014) by Iowa B — 30 Aug 2014
"Transcendence" in an ambitious flick and its own ambitiousness was a part of the problem for me: it starts off with a great idea only to bend it and transform it into something I have seen in countless movies and to make matters worse, the film's message is not something I would consider worth following or praising.
Long story short, "Transcendence" deals with the same theme of "science vs humanity", with the same fears that scientific evolution may transform people into robots and so forth(you know the story) and adds the idea that a perfect world is not perfect if everyone is a robot. And if it would have had a very good idea, I might not even have been bothered by all this, but Jack Panglen and Wally Pfister an idea with a far greater potential to tell us something we already have heard countless times before.
Also, I found that the film was offensive in the way it surrounds its protagonist with a whole army of imbeciles and clowns and then glorifies their idiocy.
It was offensive in its sense of self-righteousness and in the way it tailored everything and every character to suit a laughable "message"(the "scientific evolution is bad" cliche or any of its permutations and variations).
However, until its final act, "Transcendence" is not bad and, on the other hand, had most of its characters taken a different position, we would have been talking about either an alien race or a distant future. It is not that good to forgive it it horrendous final act, but good enough to give it 3 out of 5 overall.
