Review of Transcendence (2014) by John E — 15 Jan 2015

Man, what a snoozer. It's a shame that Transcendence is so dull, because the talented cast and the intriguing plot really had my interest. Alas, this is a time when the cast and idea can't make it past dull camera work and a horribly wonky screenplay.

The film follows Will Caster as he uploads his consciousness into a sentient computer. The whole idea of man having boundless knowledge and power, yet confined to a computer is intriguing. And yet, what we have here is a dull love story wrapped in a dull sci-fi flick.

For starters, the plot holes are horrendous. I know that sci-fi films have plot holes, but this film just presents something new each time it gets backed into a corner. Especially the ending, which not only makes no sense, but has one asking why that didn't just happen about thirty minutes before.

Acting wise, everyone does well with what they have...except Johnny Depp. For most of the film, Depp is literally on a computer screen, reciting lines emotionlessly. It is almost like he isn't even trying.

In terms of visual effects, there are a couple nice shots, but most of the visuals effects look a little fake, which is funny, because a lot of the actual sets and props give off a Syfy vibe, which isn't a good thing.

By the time the film finally ends, we are given with a dull ending to a dull film that could've been great.
