Review of Transcendence (2014) by Joshua T — 05 Sep 2014
I feel almost as though I'm the only person that liked this under appreciated gem. Perhaps Transcendence failed in its ability to fully explore many of its proposed concepts, though I cannot help but admire the films ambition.
It was, in my opinion, entertaining science fiction. It presented interesting ideas that I found engaging. If nothing else I found the film to be a beautiful love story not just in terms of romance between Depp and Hall but about love versus control as well.
The film dared to wrestle with philosophical themes that may have gotten lost in the narrative. It also suffered a bit of an identity crisis as it juggled both the philosophy and the science. And yet I did not find it to be the mess others have claimed it to be.
Overall, I did find it to be a beautiful film even if it failed to hit its mark. Transcendence does not transcend the sci-fi genre but it is an entertaining, thought provoking film.
