Review of Transamerica (2005) by Brianne Beck C — 22 Jul 2008
THIS IS NOT A MOVIE ABOUT TRANSGENDERISM.
Just so you know first off. The point that Bree is trans is a plot device, not the crutch of an issue film like "Boys Don't Cry". I've watched a lot of movies on transgenderism that are issue films and I get sick of them pretty quickly.
This movie is completely unpretentious and utterly loving. It is a journey piece, but it's done extremely well and the characters are so easy to fall in love with, both Bree and Toby, even though they are so obviously flawed.
This movie is really a movie about Bree and Toby falling in love with each other as mother and son, although Toby doesn't even realize that Bree is a transwoman until halfway through the movie and doesn't realize she's his father until ~20 minutes until the end.
This movie made me laugh out loud a lot of times, which rarely happens to me when I see a movie. I would call it a comic drama. I highly recommend this movie to anybody.
