Review of Transamerica (2005) by Layne W — 22 Sep 2008
A delightful twist on the road trip comedy in which a pre-op transgender woman is united with the 17-year-old son she's never met, and promises to drive him all the way to Los Angeles so she can reform him of his sinful ways (he's a hustler).
Their journey together, which starts off awkwardly but very soon evolves into a deep, meaningful understanding, is sincerely moving, thanks in large part to the performances by Kevin Zegers and Felicity Huffman.
Zegers is terrific, but Huffman's woman-playing-man-playing-woman tour de force is an acting miracle. She is funny, daring, devastating, tragic, pathetic, heroic, and of course, a normal, everyday woman trapped in the body of a man.
Huffman is too good not to be getting more roles this substantial; this performance, paired with her astonishing work on "Desperate Housewives," proves that she is one of the leading actresses currently working.
This is the role that should have landed her an Oscar.
