Review of Trance (2013) by Ian G — 19 Jul 2013
Danny Boyle seems to be following Steven Soderberg's lead in terms of digging up some b and c level thrillers for directing assignments and putting his own artistic spin on them in order to stretch his talents slightly outside of his comfort zone.
The results in this case turns out to be a slightly lighter version of an early Cronenberg heist film, especially when they start peeling back the layers of whats real and whats a dream or implant of Mcavoys subconscious.
Nothing relevatory in any of the twists but they do achieve a slightly hypnotic tone which suits the film well and all of the performers serve well in their roles. An ok film but lacks a certain energy that we have become used to with most Boyle films to date and ultimately forgettable.
