Review of Trance (2013) by Matt D — 24 Nov 2013
I write this full of a certain level of disappointment. I had heard that Danny Boyle's 'Trance' was a mixed bag but when I finally got around to watching it tonight I found myself surprisingly in love with the first 45 minutes or so!
...But then the film continued on and got a little messy.
A part of me thinks that maybe repeated viewings would help me get over the somewhat bizarre nature of the 2nd act, but based on just one watch I found it all a bit unsatisfying with no character to actually get invested in enough to care about.
Boyle successfully avoids most of typically cheesy stylistic choices, James McAvoy looks amazing, and the cinematography is great but these pieces don't add up to a satisfying whole.
In short, this is an example of a screenplay in need of at least more revision.
