Review of Trance (2013) by Jeff F — 22 Aug 2013
I am a big fan of Danny Boyle's films as he easily slides from one genre to the next (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire). I enjoy them primarily because they all have character. Not just the people in them, but the stylish direction he approaches his films. Trance is no exception.
Even reading the synopsis (which I suggest you don't) you won't see it coming. The movie messes with your head and just like the protagonist Simon you start to wonder what's real and what isn't. The answers at the end will most definitely surprise you. The visual, kaleidoscopic style of cinematography blends perfectly with the film's...ahem...trance soundtrack.
I always liked James McAvoy as an actor (Wanted, X-Men First Class) and this film shows a lot of his acting prowess. When he's angry, you feel it. When he thinks he's going crazy, you fear it. Rosario Dawson is a great lead actress in this film, delivering a depth I rarely see her perform in many of her previous films. And the always charismatic Vincent Cassel as Franck makes him seem dangerous as well as likeable.
PROS: Well-fleshed characters, great acting, intriguing plot, wonderful imagery, superb soundtrack.
CONS: The twists in the film will send you to dizzying places (but I think that's the whole point).
