Review of Trance (2013) by Tyler R — 09 Feb 2014
It takes leaps and bounds to progress itself where it wants to go, but the competent direction and great acting make it worth the watch. Trance follows an art auctioneer as he undergoes psychotherapy so he can remember where he hid a valuable piece of art during a heist.
As I said, the film takes leaps and bounds over logic and whatever else it can to get where it wants, but it's not as annoying as it should've been thanks to confidence behind and in front of the camera.
James McAvoy does a fantastic job with the role, always looking to be on the edge of a psychotic breakdown. And Rosario Dawson also does a fantastic job, playing a character with more depth than she had any need to, but it works well.
While the film is competently directed, the writing leaves something to be desired. I don't want to say any more about the writing, but let's just say some fine tuning was needed. Overall, Trance was enjoyable and a fun way to pass the time.
