Review of Trainwreck (2015) by Mtg837 — 11 Nov 2015
Hilarious in moments, "Trainwreck" too often felt like Schumer's best stand-up bits disjointedly inserted into, while gender swapped, a pretty by-the-numbers rom com. Perhaps the best example comes early on, when Schumer's boss (played hilariously by Tilda Swinton,) tells her to write an article on a sports doctor. Amy's character responds by saying that sports are idiotic, and that people who watch them are of a lesser intelligence. While the joke was funny as it stood alone, it didn't jive with the fact that Schumer's character was deeply attached to her sickly father, who was a big sports fan himself.
Other jokes hit you over the head too hard and too often. Lebron James plays a sensitive, down to earth version of himself (which it seems is the whole joke,) John Cena cameos as a muscle meat-head (with some great one liners, like, "I want us to be married, with three boys....and two....more boys," but his homoerotic jokes play out pretty quickly. Bill Hader is a bland mushroom of funnily un-funny, and asks us the burning question, is it possible to try too hard at not trying?
Don't get me wrong, I love Amy Schumer, especially her standup, but this movie wasn't that great.
