Review of Trainwreck (2015) by Robert B — 12 Jan 2016
Up to this point, I just haven't been on the Amy Schumer train - maybe just because I hadn't seen much? The little I had seen I kind of liked but just not enough yet for me to really be rooting for her success. After seeing Trainwreck though, her writing was really shining through and her fearlessness in tackling really sex-heavy subject matter (like any dude-helmed comedy would wade through) shows her wanting to turn over the status quo for women and comedy and put everything on the table for everyone. Kind of in the way I Love You, Man aimed at sex and relationships, Trainwreck is doing the same but with a woman - and spoiler alert: it's still funny as shit!
The big drawbacks I personally saw in the film were just problems all throughout the 3rd act with the story being too much like a roller coaster. It swerves between huge tragedy and comedy trying to save face too much and too deeply, without leaving time for the audience to realize what's going on and understand the effect on the characters in a real way. Which stinks because the comedy touches on such an intimate and relatable level all up to that point.
I would say definitely see it in theaters with friends - absolutely worth the ticket and the fun time in a crowd.
