Review of Trainwreck (2015) by Jason K — 27 May 2016

Not what I had expected. Amy Schumer is a funny, talented woman, though, and her script is cute in all the right places. Lebron James is perhaps the funniest part of the film, which speaks volumes both to how generous Schumer and Bill Hader are as performers and to just how little comic material they've given themselves here. Colin Quinn is note perfect as the slightly offensive dad, but again he's only allowed to roam just so far before being reined in.

These two are serious talents but play their weird, awkward couple with a lack of the abandon suggested by the ads that shill for the picture.

All in all it's worth a watch, but it's not the best film on any of these comedians' resumes. For an Apatow production, this entire project just feels too subtle, even gentle, for its own good.
