Review of Trainwreck (2015) by Dana F — 27 Oct 2015

I knew this film was a romantic comedy, but as a fan of "Inside Amy Schumer", I expected it to have the same bite that her show has.  Alas, unfortunately, it has more of a gummy gnaw.  As it turns out, this film is as pure a rom-com as there ever was, and it's a lot more "rom" than "com".

  It's not nearly as smart nor as funny as I expected it to be.  The story is about as formulaic as you can get and is filled with all the usual rom-com gags and clichés... and they aren't even done satirically!  There is none of the edge and little of the irreverence that makes her show so exciting and hilarious.

  Strangely, her show on cable deserves more of an "R" rating than this movie.... it all feels very PG-13, and Schumer has no place in a PG-13 world.  The story is just a big yawn, and Schumer deserves better.

  Even Bill Hader is sold short as the love-interest, he is a really funny guy but is given virtually nothing to work with.  The film does have its moments, it's a very sweet film with a lot of heart, which is one thing director Judd Apatow always nails in his films.

  But I long for his earlier work that made me laugh the whole way though.  I admit that I did laugh, but not nearly as often or as heartily as I should have.  This is probably one of the best romantic comedies you'll see this year.

.. it's just not my kind of movie.  It's not a total trainwreck, but for me it's at least a fender bender.
