Review of Trainspotting (1996) by Jacob G — 10 Nov 2012
Interesting examination of the romance of herion--at least on the level of surface sheen. Because heroin is a drug all about romance. Romance of the needle. Romance of chasing the dragon. Even the spiral beyond addiction into non-functional is so easy to idealize and quantitatively present.
And this, this portrayal of romance with the scariest of the major illegal drugs is funny and touching and horrifying and leaves us thinking "No no no..." while the movie flashes the mind of the addict.
"I'm quitting heroin," he says. "Just one last hit to allow the vicodin to set in." And that's this movie. It hooks us into the character through our fascination with watching them do something we've all the scary stories about, but don't really know anything about, not really.
And then we become like the parents, where we hope this time he stays clean, all while waiting for the other shoe to drop.
