Review of Trainspotting (1996) by Gavin M — 18 Jun 2013
Trainspotting is a very intriguing film, it is an enthralling story about the heroin addiction of 4 young men. But contrary to what most critics think about this film, I actually believe this story is much more than a look into a culture we've never seen before, it is a statement about how destructive and hopelessly miserable we can be.
These 4 guys inject heroin everyday literally like there's no tomorrow, they have no responsibilities, and mainly just get stoned and watch movies everyday. Oh, and, they steal the occasional tv every now and then to make money for heroin.
They aren't happy doing heroin though, they have lots of fun, and have 0 responsibilities, but they aren't happy with where their lives are going. And even when they have jobs, and come off the heroin, they still aren't very happy, all they care about is getting money and working.
They feel no fulfillment, just as before. There isn't really a difference between these 2 lives, they're both unhappy, and filled with addiction, except one isn't an addiction to an illegal substance.
Basically, I just think this film was saying that with or without responsibility, this life is still miserable and pointless.
