Review of Training Day (2001) by Eric V — 20 Oct 2011
Training Day is a masterpiece of the street crime genre. The streets and street life never felt so real in any film until this came along and photographed it and represented it to fine detail. Dramatizations aside, the film is grounded in realism and presents each situation to almost a terrifying level.
Antonie Fuqua directs with a master craftsman hand, he keeps everything gritty and very brutal - there are no pulled punches or short cuts. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke deliver absolutely electrifying performances as the good cop and bad cop.
The height of transformation Denzel accomplishes in being the "bad" guy is stunning - he is truly a force. The emotional range that Ethan Hawke delivers is the stuff of legend. Hawke just bleeds greatness in every scene he is in.
I truly love this film for its technical achievements, powerful acting from an all around stellar cast, and fantastic realism.
