Review of Training Day (2001) by Elliott F — 19 Jul 2012
Antoine Fuqua did a terrific job directing this tense cop thriller. Ethan Hawke plays Jake Hoyt, a rookie cop who goes on his training day with narcotics squad head Alonzo Harris, played by Denzel Washington.
The day is a breathless, fast-paced series of terrors for the young Jake to handle, and he realizes rather quickly that Alonzo isn't all that he seems to be. Hawke is superb as Jake, a man who goes from fresh-faced rookie to hardened cop in a pretty short amount of time.
Washington won the Best Actor Oscar for this, and he totally deserved it. His charismatic villain is chilling to watch. Fuqua's direction is accomplished, making a sort of blandly written film seem truly authentic.
