Review of Training Day (2001) by Carl W — 15 Aug 2011
A cutting edge script, gripping cinematography and fast-paced editing, coupled with over-the-top, bad-ass and just plain true to life acting made Training Day one of my favorite movies of all time. Jake (Ethan Hawke) is a confused rookie who's experiencing his first day on the job with his new partner, Alonzo (Denzel).
Even though he's nervous and in over his head he keeps his wits about him throughout the experience, proving he's every bit as tough as Alonzo, who is undeniably the best part of the movie. Denzel plays a complete madman who takes you on a psychotic ride that makes you feel as though you're in Jake's shoes the whole time.
It's impossible to figure him out. Is he just a really good cop who knows how to play the system, or is he as crooked as they come?
