Review of Train to Busan (2016) by Illerateduck — 26 Mar 2020
TL:DR Zombie film that has a strong emotional core and terrifying zombies.
Fast zombies. These are the only way that zombies should be. While slow-moving zombies are copacetic, the swift variant has always been where the danger lies for me. Give me a Left 4 Dead over a Resident Evil any day. Regarding the characters, the main character Seok-woo has a fairly standard character arc. He begins the film self-centered and selfish but grows throughout with the help of his young daughter into caring about others outside his immediate circle. The actress who played his daughter also does a commendable job.
There are also a few side characters who do get some personality injected into them. Each is likeable in their own way, but lack backstory and character arcs, which is not surprising considering the runtime.
The action is also top-notch. The fear created throughout is tense and palpable. The scenes that will stay with me will definitely be when the frenzied zombies begin to pile up on top of each other trying to reach their prey.
I would recommend this film if you like great zombie action with a simple plot (the plot is literally the title). It also has some strong characterisation for the main characters and even the side characters get their time to shine.
