Review of Train to Busan (2016) by Luke E — 14 Aug 2016
Yeon Sang-Ho's other Zombie Disaster feature is the director's first foray into live action. Unlike 'Seoul Station', 'Train to Busan' is more akin to an edge-of-your-seat blockbuster than a very serious survival film with thrilling but bleak pay offs.
The plot almost follows what Steven Spielberg's 'War of the Worlds' did best, taking a divorced father trying to be a better dad to his daughter. All which mostly takes place within a Zombie Apocalypse (duh), but this time on a Train.
Almost thrilling to Bong Joon-Ho's execution of 2014's 'Snowpiercer', the film is an incredible non-stop thrill ride of survivors facing a Zombie Apocalypse on a train. While I'm not to sure if this film has any connection to 'Seoul Station', I'd say the film's entertainment factor is a lot more friendlier, given the bigger scale and almost incidental humour among the film's biggest set pieces.
I'd also say the character's who also reflect relatable stereotypes of modern society are well written and performed. It's only with the progression of the plot we'll either care for them or dramatically see them killed off (not so much of a spoiler).
I'm sure the film would've done huge in the South Korean Box Office, cause this means it certainly has a place on the Cult Classic shelves.
