Review of Trailer Park Boys: The Movie (2006) by James P — 05 Jul 2008
A guilty pleasure that isn't really that guilty if you think about it for a few minutes, "Trailer Park Boys" has risen to the level of a cultural institution in Canada over the past decade or so. Despite its reliance on sitcom tropes, the show has genuine artistic chops, from its mockumentary cinematography to its sneaky linguistic jokes to its largely unnoticed cultural specificity (we all may laugh, but Nova Scotians laugh even HARDER)...
I suppose the movie does what it ought to do to spread the gospel of Ricky, Julian and Bubbles to the unaware masses (mainly to those south of the 49th), but for someone who had his fill of the formula back in third season, there wasn't really enough here that was new to fully justify the proceedings. Still, there are plenty of moments of hilarity, particularly from Robb Wells' brilliant motormouth word-mangler Ricky. A few more Lahey shit-metaphors and a little more J-Roc would have been appreciated, mind you...
