Review of Toys (1992) by Mark M — 22 May 2012
"Toys" is probably one of the oddest films I've ever had to sit through. "Toys" is basically a film about a group of people who take a toy company way too seriously. The idea actually is interesting, and to the film's credit, it actually does some things rather well.
The General is fun, it's not painful to sit through, and it's very original. Unfortunately, that is where the list ends for "Toys". The visuals, although nice to look at, are over the top and distract from the film, which is the first of many problems I have with this film.
Second, the film isn't that funny. It has some chuckle worthy moments, but in general "Toys" is rather bland, and sometimes the attempts at humor go to the point of being downright disturbing.
Not only that, but the humor never really goes beyond a chuckle. On top of that, the story is filled with a large amount of plot holes that distract not only those who pay very close attention to the film, but the average viewer as well.
There are also numerous scenes which make no sense, and feel like they don't belong anywhere in this movie. And even if they did have a meaning, the film is so poorly made, that the audience can't possibly begin to understand the possible symbolism within the scene.
Overall, "Toys" is a fair attempt at making a clever well made film, but in the end it just comes across as stupid, pointless, and confusing. I am a huge fan of Robin Williams, and yet I still did not enjoy this film.
My recommendation, unless you really want to be able to say that you've seen every Robin Williams film ever, I would pass on "Toys" and watch one of Robin Williams better works. 2/5 stars.
