Review of Toys (1966) by Quentin N — 09 Sep 2009
I thought this was an interesting and very well made film. Does it have it's mistakes? Yes it certainly does, but I feel that the good parts of the film simply overshadow the mediocre aspects. When the film works it feels like a whimiscal American version of a Hayo Miazaki film.
It's an abstract fantasy world with absolutely stunning visuals and themes/messages that you would usually find in a film by Miazaki. When it doesn't work it's either wasting time with diversions that stall the story and divert your attention (such as the utterly pointless fake music video scene), throwing in random plot points that don't matter (hey everyone guess what.
..Joan Cusack was a robot the whole time!), or lowering itself to utter cheesiness (such as Joan Cusack's entirely pointless character and how "cute" she is or the sappy musical numbers.) But overall I feel that the films flaws and positive points balance out to make an interesting enough film that you should definitely consider viewing.
