Review of Toys (1966) by Doug C — 29 May 2011
I'm on the fence with this film. On the one hand I enjoy its absolute Willy Wonka-esque quirkiness, sexy Robin Wright. LL Cool J, is just that--completely cool, and the general in his half-cocked gung-ho attitude, though misguided, but on the other hand, I'm not a big fan of the anti-war/anti-military, and isn't it a bit oxymoronic that Leland has to send warriors (sacrifice them) to save his own butt, yet doesn't that mean we have enemies who try to do us harm, and essentially we to have soldiers to fight these enemies? It's a bit hypocritical.
Some great lines in it, though, great visuals, which Levinson is always capable of, but not a total winner. Still, fun, music is good. Can't believe the relationship between Leland and Gwen (is her name even brought up in the film?).
